Within the Live Sector across Europe, representation of Black heritage professionals working behind the scenes lags far behind representation on stage - which itself is not close to reflecting society, or the importance of Black music creators and executives’ contribution to popular culture.
UK-based initiative POWER UP was set up to empower outstanding Black music creators and executives while actively tackling anti-Black racism in all sectors of music. As the inaugural recipient of IMPALA’s Changemaker Award, POWER UP is opening up conversations across Europe to help bring about the real change that Black talent and Black execs working behind the scenes need to see to forge a fairer, stronger, thriving music industry.
Conversations about enhancing Black participation within Live Music and improving the experience of artists, professionals and audiences are long overdue. This panel gathers experts from across the European Live Sector to explore the science (and logic) behind diverse programming, and to share experiences, highlight amazing work being done to bring about change, and to challenge the rest of the sector to embrace being actively anti-racist.
